Registration for Overseas EHPs
In order to work in the UK as an Environmental Health Practitioner, an Overseas EHP will need to make a successful application for registration with the Environmental Health Registration Board (EHRB).
There is a procedure by which we can assess your application by comparing your qualifications, practical training and work experience with our curriculum and practical training requirements for EHPs in the UK.
The core areas which your application will be mapped against are Food Safety, Health and Safety, Housing, Environmental Protection and Public Health.
There are typically four decisions which can be made for applications from overseas EHPs:
- An application displays so little comparability with the UK curriculum and practice that it is a ‘mismatch’. Documents will be returned to applicant. It is suggested that the applicant undertake a CIEH accredited course of study in Environmental Health;
- An application displays generic Environmental and Public Health mindedness but lacks sufficient engagement with specific technical aspects of the five core areas. The application is a ‘mismatch’ but the applicant will be offered the opportunity to address any technical shortfall via the ‘aptitude test’ or the ‘adaptation’ route (see relevant guidance notes below);
- An application is made up of a degree level qualification which is based on Environmental and Public Health mindedness and demonstrates sufficient academic engagement and experience in the technical aspects of some but not all of the five core areas. The applicant will be offered a ‘shortened’ Certificate of Registration which acknowledges the display of generalist level competencies in explicitly stated core areas.
- An application demonstrates that the applicant’s route to becoming and practicing as an EHP is equivalent to the curriculum and practical training requirements of UK EHPs. A ‘full’ Certificate of Registration will be issued.
In the majority of cases the processing of an application for registration can take up to four months from the date of receipt of the full application.
