Q: Why do I need the Certificate of Registration?
A: The Certificate of Registration of the Environmental Health Registration Board is needed to work as an Environmental Health Practitioner (EHP) in the UK.

Q: Where can I get help with my application?

Q: How long will it take to process my application?
A: The CIEH aims to process your application within 4 months, however if you fail to submit all the required evidence with your application form and we have to chase it up the process could take longer.
Q: What evidence of my qualification should I provide?
A: You need to provide a certified copy of your Environmental Health degree or higher level qualification certificate, along with a transcript of the marks obtained. Full details of your Environmental Health course must be provided including the University attended, course title, length or course, mode of study, curriculum/syllabus/module descriptors followed and details of a contact person at the University.
Q: What qualifications are regarded as a mismatch?
A: Qualifications that are at a lower level than a BSc (hons) would be regarded as a mismatch, for example National Diplomas, Higher National Diplomas and Ordinary Degrees. Additionally qualifications that do not cover the same content as an accredited BSc (hons) or MSc Environmental Health programme in the UK which is outlined in ‘Curriculum 2011’ would be a mismatch. A mapping exercise will be carried out to compare the content of your degree programme with ‘Curriculum 2011’, details of the curriculum learning outcomes and mapping exercise can be found on the how to apply page.
Q: What evidence of my practical training should I provide?
A: You need to provide full details of practical training undertaken during or after the course including the logbook or portfolio completed during the training period (if applicable), references from your training organisation or confirmation of the practical training content from your university. A mapping exercise will be carried out to compare the subject areas and activities covered in your training with the ‘Portfolio of Professional Practice’ (PPP), details of the PPP can be found on the how to apply page.
Q: What details should my training organisation/employers references contain?
A: Your references should provide full details of the subject areas covered, activities undertaken and your duties and responsibilities.
Q: What happens if I can’t provide evidence of my qualifications or training?
A: It is your responsibility to demonstrate the status of your qualifications and practical training obtained. The CIEH will use this information to carry out the mapping exercises against ‘Curriculum 2011’ and the ‘Portfolio of Professional Practice’ therefore if you are unable to provide the evidence your application is likely to be regarded as a mismatch. Q: How long will the compensatory measures take to complete?
A: The time required to complete the compensatory measures will depend upon several factors including:
- The number of shortfalls found when comparing your qualifications and practical training to a UK EHP – this will determine how many sections of the ‘Portfolio of Professional Practice’ (PPP) you need to complete and how many exam papers you need to take.
- The placement opportunities available to you when completing the sections of the PPP.
- How long it takes you to prepare for the exams and interview.
- The dates of the exam and interview sessions at the CIEH (these are usually held three times a year).
- Whether you are successful in completing the assessments on your first attempt.
Q: Where can I find employment when I have the Certificate of Registration?
A: Many Environmental Health jobs are advertised on the EHN jobs website at: www.ehn-jobs.com.
Q: Where can I find employment if I don’t have the Certificate of Registration?
A: You do not need the Certificate of Registration from the Environmental Health Registration Board to work as a Technical/ Scientific Officer and Many Technical Officer, Scientific Officer and private sector jobs are advertised on the EHN jobs website at: www.ehn-jobs.com. You should contact the employers directly to find out the qualifications and experience they require for the posts advertised.
Q: I have not been awarded the Certificate of Registration – what are my options?
A: If you have the qualifications and experiences required you could seek employment as a Technical/ Scientific Officer in a Local Authority, employment opportunities are often advertised on the EHN jobs website at: www.ehn-jobs.com.
Alternatively you may wish to enrol on a CIEH accredited BSc(hons) or MSc programme and take the CIEH professional assessments to obtain the Certificate of Registration of the Environmental Health Registration Board and work as an Environmental Health Practitioner.
Another option is enrolling on a course accredited by the Environmental Health Registration Board such as the Higher Certificate in Food Premises Inspection. Accredited Higher Certificate courses are aimed at Technical Officers working in a Local Authority and details of the courses available can be found on the qualifications page.
